WinterStart Festival lights up the Rockies

Residents and visitors in both Banff and Lake Louise join in the fun as we all celebrate the arrival of snow, and the excitement of the Christmas season, during the WinterStart Festival.

This year, the festival runs from November 29th through December 7th, with two action-packed weekends of winter sports, music, children's activities... and everyone's favourite attraction, the annual Santa Claus Parade of Lights.

At the World Cup alpine races in Lake Louise (Nov.29/30, Dec.6/7), the fastest skiers on earth hurtle down the mountain at speeds that easily top 100 kilometres per hour.

The busiest day of WinterStart is Saturday Dec. 6. In the afternoon, bring the young ones out to enjoy Christmas in the Rockies, with Christmas crafts, face painting, Santa Claus photos, cookie decorating, carol singing, and even a treasure hunt on Banff Avenue.

Then join the crowds beneath the festive lights along Banff Ave. for the Santa Claus Parade at 6 p.m.

Sunshine Village Banff - Open 2008

Sunshine Village is open, with a fantastic 60-cm base of pure, natural snow. The webcam shot below was taken yesterday, November 13 2008.

It’s early-season conditions. The Strawberry lift and two quads – WaWa and Standish are now in operation. More runs are expected open Saturday, as crews finish preparing runs.

It’s also a great time to stay on the mountain, at Banff’s only ski-in, ski-out hotel. The Sunshine Mountain Lodge, formally known as the Sunshine Inn, is offering discounted rates, with packages starting at $139 per person including next day skiing. Heli-Hike

After being very impressed with a recent Heli-Hike in the Canadian Rockies, I wanted to write a bit about it and provide details on how you can go about booking it for yourself, as these tours need to be booked in advance.

I went out last Tuesday, October 14, which is getting quite late for Heli-Hiking. As you can see by the pictures, there was already some snow. Once the snow really accumulates, you can take advantage of a Heli-Snowshoe tours which can also be booked through rocky-peak Ski Holidays.

The drive to the Helicopter start point is spectacular in itself as you have to drive along the magnificent Icefields Parkway from either Jasper, Banff or Lake Louise. The location makes this tour a great addition to many itineraries in Western Canada as it is right en-route and so minimises travel time.

Once you arrive at the Icefields Heliport, just outside of Banff National Park, you will be safety briefed, geared up, and then you board the helicopter.

The helicopter takes you into the backcountry where you can start your hike with the certified guide. Martha, the guide, was very knowledgeable and has the qualifications to back this up!

The walk in itself was easy, however, if you are a stronger hiker, slightly more challenging heli-hikes can be arranged. The home-made gourmet lunch was delicious and really satisfying. After a couple of hours of hiking, the guide will radio the helicopter pilot and you will be picked up. It really is that easy!

Black Bear Brown Cub

These pictures were taken just outside of Banff on the old highway, Bow Valley Parkway 1A, between Banff and Lake Louise. It is interesting as the two cubs were brown, and the mother a Black Bear. Just to confuse things, a Black Bear, can actually be brown. In Canada we call the Brown Bear a Grizzly bear. There are only 3 types of Bear in Canada: Black Bear, Grizzly Bear and Polar Bear. You will only see the Black and Grizzly in the Canadian Rockies. A Grizzly can be identified by several features including distinct shoulder hump. This hump is due to large muscles necessary for digging roots, tubers and ground squirrels.

Please remember to keep at least 100 metres away from a bear if you see one, even if you are in a car. Use a telephoto lens if you want to take a picture and give the bear plenty of space. What sadly happens, know as a "bear jam" to locals, is that cars and RVs hold up the traffic to see the bear and the bear gets familiar with humans being close. Familiarisation is not good as we want them to stay wild! As soon as a bear is familiar with humans, it is much more likely to run into problems. A fed bear is a dead bear and it is a serious offence to feed any wildlife in a National or Provincial Park.

Canada Day 2008 in Banff

Celebrate Canada on July 1 in our spectacular mountain setting!

Banff's ever-popular Canada Day Parade returns to the newly refreshed downtown area in 2008. It's a highlight of a grand day of celebrations that includes an all-day festival and party in Central Park, and a thrilling fireworks display.

Canada Day in Banff begins at 9 a.m. with the annual Parks Canada Pancake Breakfast, in the tranquil surroundings of the Parks Administration grounds and gardens. At noon, the scene shifts to Central Park, where there will be live entertainment all day long: from Siksika First Nations Dance, to Parks Canada Mountain Wit Theatre, to the sounds of local legends performing on the Louis Trono Gazebo and Stampede stages.

And of course there will be food, t-shirts, sidewalk art, fun and games for the kids.

At 5 p.m., the Canada Day Parade takes over Banff Avenue, with colourful floats, marching bands, baton corps, and equestrian riders, winding up once again at Central Park. The party comes to a close at 11 p.m. with the traditional fireworks show.

It's a great day for a visit to Banff. And remember: entry into Banff National Park is free on Canada Day... no admission fee at the Park gates!

Experiencing Banff by Bus: Roam!

Environment-friendly hybrid buses offer a "wild" experience

Banff residents and visitors alike are wild about Banff's new public transit buses.

On June 2, 2008, Banff became the first municipality in Canada to introduce an all-hybrid electric transit fleet. The new buses look special too; they are wrapped in authentic Banff National Park wildlife imagery. Each bus features a unique back-country view of grizzlies, elk, goats and wolves.

Banff Town Councillor Stavros Karlos is one of many local residents who are thrilled with the new buses. "We live in a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it is really important to us to always consider the environmental impacts of our decisions," says Stavros.

"The new buses reduce emissions and lower our fuel and lifecycle costs. They also look amazing, and provide a new experience of our park surroundings... I think people are going to want to leave their cars where they are, and Roam instead."

The new public transit service has been named "Roam" to suggest both the experience we enjoy while riding the buses, as well as the grandeur of our natural environment where wildlife roam free.

Cougar kill on edge of Banff Townsite

Cougar kill on edge of Banff Townsite

What:
On the evening of June 16, a cougar kill was reported in the Middle Springs area behind Kootenay Avenue, on the periphery of the Banff Townsite.
Because this is on the edge of a residential area, wardens have placed "Carnivore Alert" signs in the area.

Why:
We often have bears, cougars and wolves near the townsite, and on occasion they may even pass through Banff neighbourhoods. This is considered the normal state of affairs in and around the town of Banff.

If Visitors and Residents Ask:
All Banff residents and visitors are reminded that direct conflict between cougars and humans is very rare but extra caution is advised when travelling in this area, particularly during hours of dawn, dusk and at night. Small children should always be closely supervised and please remember that if you are walking your dog, it must be on a leash.

Please report any bear, wolf, or cougar activity to the Banff Warden Office 24 hour dispatch at 403-762-1470.

First Bear of Spring 2008 - Banff National Park

This big male grizzly was photographed on March 16th by a Trans-Canada Highway Project remote camera in the lower Bow Valley. Male grizzlies typically emerge out of their dens in mid-March. Female bears with their cubs tend to emerge mid-April.

This is an indicator that Spring is here and we need to be bear aware!

The opening of the Grizzly terrain park section has added four new acres of features to test the skills of riders of all levels while boosting the size of Sunshine Village's famed Rogers Terrain Park by one-third.

Skiers and boarders now can access 12 full acres of the Rockies' best jumps, boxes and rails while enjoying the spectacular beauty of Sunshine Village.

''We're really excited about all the new features which add so much more to our terrain park experience,'' said Tim Hyndman, Terrain Park Supervisor. ''We've received extremely positive feedback about the four biggest and boldest jibs we've ever built at Sunshine Village.''

Grizzly has awesome features ranging from small to extra-large, including four large and extra large jibs. The highlight is a 24 foot long by four foot high box, professionally painted by local artists Don Petersen and Anthony Orsatti from New World Samurai Tattoo Studio in Canmore.

''We were approached by Sunshine staff to create a piece for the terrain park and we jumped at the opportunity,'' said Petersen. ''We're thrilled with the way it turned out and look forward to doing more work in such a fantastic venue.''
