Banff Wins Construction Award

The Town of Banff won top billing in the Alberta Construction Magazine's annual awards for Banff Refreshing, a $22.8 million project to rejuvenate Banff's tired downtown core.

The project, which is replacing century-old underground infrastructure and spruces up the 100 and 200 blocks of Banff Avenue, was name top project of the year in the civil category.

The 100 and 200 blocks of Banff Avenue are due to be reopened to traffic by the end of November. Landscaping will be completed next spring, with a final completion date for the project at the end of June 2008.

Alberta Construction Magazine was impressed by the pedestrian-friendly nature of the project, including the wider sidewalks, additional benches and rest spots for people to take in the scenery, as well as more greenery along the main strip.

The Town of Banff's $1 million marketing and communication's plan to keep people informed and coming to Banff during construction was also cited as a positive part of the project.

Banff also got credit for the use of recycled materials in the project, such as asphalt removed from the original road that was later reused as the base of the new road put down last month.

Banff Wins Transit Award

Banff Mayor John Stutz has won a national award for his role in championing the evolution of the town's new public transit system, from a mere bus ride to what is touted to become an enjoyable experience.

The mayor received the award from the Canadian Urban Transit Association in Quebec City on Wednesday Nov 14 2007. Banff is expected to bring in its new fleet of four hybrid buses early next year.

As part of the overall plan, the Town of Banff will place larger-than-life wildlife wraps around the buses, put story boards along the interior ceilings of the buses, and install a GPS system to help orient transit riders who are less familiar with Banff sites.
